2018 / 2019 - New Rule Changes

Basketbal England Board Changes

Graham Biggs, who has spent much of his career playing, coaching and running teams in Gloucestershire, has been elected onto the board of Basketball England. Read more here.

South West Champions League

A Cup competition for the South West teams that runs from September til Easter. A Champions League if you like!

Open to any of the teams from Exeter and District, Plymouth, Cornwall, Dorset, Gloucester and Somerset basketball but limited to a maximum of 12 teams (this season) and no more than 4 teams from one basketball area.

Teams will be put into 4 groups, and hopefully if numbers allow you will not meet a teams from your area in the group stage!

The format will mean each group of 3 teams will play each other, with one home match and one away match, with teams progressing to further rounds until a neutral court final. Thus guaranteeing each team at least two games.

Now the cost - £30 per team (all players must be registered with BE), format and rules to be provided but basically teams cover their own court, table officials and floor officials costs except for the Final.

This is purely on a first come first served basis, and teams will be considered entered once payment received (non refundable unless competition doesn’t take place).

Pre Season Meeting

A reminder that the pre-season meeting will be held on the 4th of September 19.00-22.00 in the Sports Hall at Gloucester College, Gloucester Campus, Llanthony Road, Gloucester. GL2 5JQ

The session will be taken by Richard Stokes, a FIBA official, and will include a review/discussion on rule changes introduced last year and this ( of which there are many).

It will highlight the GBBA's Respect Policy, and cover how the match officials work with the team coaches and table Officials, eg the Importance of pre-game meetings.

Officials Funding Offer

During the meeting on the 28th August, the commitee reviewed two senior players' request for sponsorship to undertake the upcoming Level 2 referees course.

One an existing Level 1 official, the other a new referee to the pool.

The committee have agreed to fully fund both applications ( course fee £120.00 ) and look forward to supporting them achieve their goals.


We are hoping to receive funding requests from two junior officials as a means of supporting clubs who are actively encouraging/registering junior players into their senior sides.
